![]() How I Got Into Triathlon: The idea to do a triathlon was first put into my head in the winter of 2007-2008, during my sophomore year of college. I was on the UK swim team and whenever we would go on team runs, I would always finish at the front. One of my coaches casually asked if I were any good a biking, because if I was, then I should try doing a triathlon. Later that winter, I had the good fortune of having my house robbed. Thankfully I was insured and instead of replacing some of the junk that was stolen, I used the insurance money to get a road bike. I signed up for my first race in the Spring of 2008 (the Miami University Student Foundation Sprint Triathlon). I got smoked, but I've been hooked ever since. The training variety that comes with triathlon is a huge mental break from just swimming (I was a distance swimmer for UK) and definitely helps stave off burnout. I compete primarily in the sprint and international distance triathlons, but a sprinkle a 70.3 in here and there. My goal for the 2011 season is to turn pro and race in draft-legal ITU races.
Coaching Experience
Since the Summer of 2008, I have been the Head Coach of the Lexington Polo Club, where I coached swimmers of all levels and abilities from the ages of 4-18. This past season we finished 2nd in the Bluegrass Swim Conference Championships (Small Team Division). Additionally, I am taking over the reins of the Sayre High School swim team mid-season as the interim Head Coach and I am looking forward to the challenge. As a coach, I try to develop one-on-one relationships with my athletes, because I feel that the better I know the person, the better I am equipped to push them to become better athletes.
